Yet he displays his own unique sense of loyalty and honor, protecting those he cares for and standing up when he feels a true injustice is being done – especially if it threatens the town he obviously loves. He's a true scoundrel through and through – not in the Han Solo sense, but in the "he has an innocent man murdered to get what he wants" sense. Brought to vivid life by the amazing performance of Ian McShane, Swearengen is truly one of the best television characters ever created. Right from the start, this was clear in the portrayal of Al Swearengen.

Like those series, Deadwood takes place in a familiar genre – a western rather than a police drama – but shows that it's possible to use the similar archetypes of earlier stories while also crafting a series that feels incredibly different and obviously has an original take on a genre we all know. Deadwood was created by David Milch, a writer who'd worked on two groundbreaking police dramas, Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue, the latter of which he created. So begins Deadwood, a series set in the real life South Dakota town that was the home of many notable historical figures, including the real Bullock and Swearengen, not to mention others we'd get to know in the series - such as Wild Bill Hickock (Keith Carradine) and Calamity Jane (Robin Weigert), both of whom would have a notable impact on storylines in Deadwood. Swearengen is as fierce and determined as Bullock is, and willing to go to pretty ruthless lengths to get his way.
But Seth can't let all of the chaos and disorder he sees in town stand and soon is back to being a lawman – and finding he has one tough opponent in Al Swearengen ( Ian McShane), the owner of a local saloon and brothel. Seth Bullock ( Timothy Olyphant) has given up his life as a former Montana sheriff when he comes to Deadwood in 1876, simply looking to start anew – which soon leads to opening a hardware store with Sol Star ( John Hawkes).
